MEET THE MAKER

I’m Georgie Orme-Brown, a maker of contemporary fine jewellery. I’m based out of a studio in Bath, Somerset. I’m at the beginning of my business journey, my website has been up for just over a year.

I came to jewellery design through doing a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design. This course lead me onto doing a BA in Jewellery Design and I then went out to work in the industry for a few years before deciding to do my own thing.

I employ a range of techniques in my making, I hand make some items to commission and I also work in wax for pieces in my collection. I predominately work in recycled silver and gold with recycled diamond and gemstones.

WHAT ARE YOUR FEEDBACKS?

I have dedicated time to business training and I now have a clear vision of the steps I want to take to move forward. Pathways I was unsure over before, I now have a clear yes or no in my mind.

I learnt a lot about SEO which will be very important for my business as I continue to improve my website.

I have discovered how important it is to get the way in which you write about yourself right – it was more defining than I realised and updating it was unexpectedly progressive.

FIVE THINGS YOU’LL BRING WITH YOU FROM THE EXPERIENCE:

• Try and have a structure to the way you work to organise and maximise your time.
• Make decisions – don’t deliberate forever. Make your decision – get someone to help you decide if needed, get something done and move on.
• It is ok if your practice and your goals don’t look like everyone else’s – it’s good to be different
• Keep an open mind – have a go at anything as you never know what might come of it
• Write a business plan! Even if you don’t think you’ll use it, the exercise itself can help organise your plans.
